First Time Scrapper?

When your car has no life left in it, it breaks down, crashes, fails its MOT and the cost to fix it is more than the cars worth, it might be a good time to get yourself to a scrap yard. But if it’s your first time, there are a few things that you may need to know in order to be fully prepared. Here are a few:

Clear Your Car

You need to clear all personal contents from your vehicle and remove any tax disc that you might wish to claim back. Make sure that there are no valuables in the car and check it thoroughly. You don’t want to lose anything and you won’t be able to get it back.

Paperwork

When you take your car for scrap, you will need with you your V5 from the DVLA. You must also provide a form of photographic identification such as a driving licence or passport. This is for security of the vehicle and because lots of people leave their log books in their car, making them susceptible to theft.

(CoD) Certificate of Destruction

You will be presented with a Certificate of Destruction when you take your car in for scrap. This is produced in order for the DVLA to know that that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle – if this is not possible straight away, you will receive one in the post or you can collect it soon after.
If you do not get a Certificate of Destruction immediately, you can fill in the ‘Selling or transferring your vehicle to a motor trader, insurer or dismantler’ (V5C/3) section of your V5C and send it to the DVLA and tell them you no longer have the vehicle.

Last But Not Least!

Once your car has been scrapped and you have the CoD, you can claim your refunds for any unused months of car insurance and road tax.
